Three years ago this weekend, a good friend of mine died in a car crash with a drunk driver. We, his friends, were devastated. He was a good friend to everyone as well as a great husband and father. He will always be greatly missed. His death was needless because where I live, law enforcement, on holiday weekends, have checkpoints to assist getting drunk drivers off the road, Unfortunately the last few years, including that one, there were less checkpoints due to “budget considerations” at both the city and county. I’m sure that was consolation to my friends family. We all make choices in our lives but sometimes those choices can have consequences for us, or a total stranger. We have a duty, whether we realize it or not, to our family, friends, and neighbors to be responsible, not just to ourselves, but for each other.Anything else is, in effect, an act of suicide.
