Online Atheism – Today More Than Ever

I was looking at Twitter and a tweet from someone I’ve followed for a long time caught my attention. I don’t know if many recall or not but there used to be a podcast, apostasynow that used to be a regular visit for me but like so many podcasts and blogs, seemed to disappear. Well they’re back and it’s good to see them. A decade ago, podcasts and yes, blogs for atheists weremany really good bloggers and their respective venues. Heck, I did for about a year and a half beginning in 2015.

Being a Joiner

By nature, I’m not much of a jointer. The reason is because I’m generally disappointed in organizations that want to represent my rights to Congress or a court. It’s not because they don’t try, it’s that they tend to go beyond what they claim is their mission. It doesn’t matter whether it’s some secular or atheist organization, or just some group that claims they’re going to do right by me for only $40 per year. I usually discover that the initial investment is only the beginning of a never ending email and regular mail barrage of needing more money for one thing or another. It’s usually political and honestly, that’s where I end the relationship.

You Used to be an Atheist?

“I used to be an atheist”. What? Yes, I had turned on the television and there was a commercial for Prager U, a conservative organization that, as far as I know, produces short instructional videos about issues that conservatives, in general, are concerned about. The commercial has several young people in it, and one, a young woman, is the one that claimed to once be an atheist. A few seconds later, she’s back on the screen saying how she learned about god from Prager U.

Are Atheists Really Diverse?

I was just perusing a short essay from my friend vjack over at Atheist Revolution. The essay had to do with the diversity within atheism and celebrated how, although we may all have a single non-belief in gods, that in other ways we are very diverse. Personally, I don’t see it and even though Jack admits that a majority (in fact, at least 90%) lean to the political left, that we have other beliefs/views that make us diverse, like a belief in ancient aliens, ghosts, etc. Those same beliefs may be found in the general population and I don’t think can be used to show how diverse atheists are.

Why Are Most Atheists Liberal/Progressive?

I’m sometimes asked how I can be a conservative atheist in a world where most atheists are liveral or progressive. It’s easy: All I did was come to the conclusion that it was improbable any gods exist at all. nothing else changed with me. As a conservative, I’ve been pro choice forever, even though personally, I am against abortion (I think the government should not be involved in personal decisions like this), the sme with same sex marriage. Remember when the world was going to come to an end when SCOTUS came down on the side of sme sex marriage? It’s 2020 (5 years later) and we’re still here. I supported this for the same reason I supported a woman’s right to choose. That’s actually a conservative stance: government should not be interfering in our personal choices as long as those choices do not cause harm to ourselves or to others.
