I received an interesting comment from this post that started me thinking about whether or not the bible is an historical document. Certainly there are names and places within the book that have been verified by historians and archeologists, but should the bible be considered, overall, history?
There doesn’t seem to be a day that goes by without my seeing some believer on social media saying something about morality and how morality flows from God. Every atheist I know, including myself have addressed this at one or another time whether on social media, in a blogpost, or even face-to-face.
I am constantly amazed how Christians refuse to understand a basic constitutional principle of our republic in that the government is forbidden from endorsing any one religious belief over another. Every time though, the same people want to fight that which has be precedent in this country for well over 100 years.
Why do Christians appear to be threatened by atheists? Are we such a force, a voice, that our criticism of their beliefs becomes an actual threat or is it that we make them uncomfortable by just raising questions about what they believe?
As an atheist, even before, I have always been curious about the different Christian denomination traditions. Why, when there’s just one canon, are there so many different interpretations of what is actually meant in the scriptures? Although most of them have a common tradition of salvation through acceptance of Jesus, within the particular sect, practices may be very different.
