Euphemistically Speaking

I was recently recalling a story about a friend o mine, from Chile. He is a well educated and very personable. At the time we began to become friendly, he had only lived in our country about three years and although his english was excellent, he described how difficult it was for him to ubferstand the various ways we expressed ourselves. For him, english was a mish-mash of words and phrases thar had kittle or nothing to do with whatever the subject was being discussed. One example he gave, he had read in the newspaper that some important person had passed away. It took him a couple of moments to realize the author was referring to the persons death.

Ahh, rhe lazy days o summer. Where I live, it’s Monsoon Season, when we receive most of our yearly precipitation. It’s amost like clockwork: Clouds build up the early part of the day, culminating in what can be some violent Thunderstorms beginning around 3 pm, lasting for an hour, or two. Repeat the next day. Usually. Another summer event, which has nothing to do with weather ot an dramatic event, is the lack of views I receive. A few years ago, I discovered what I thought was some kind of anomaly in viewership. At that time, another blogger told me it was because it was summer and thar I would probably see an uptick to “norma” sometime in August. He was right.

Are Words Violence?

Sticks and stones will break my bones but words shall never hurt me. Remember this rhyme from childhood? It is meant as a way to respond to verbal bullying from others, Supposedly it helps kids become more resilient to verbal attacks. It had been known, once, to deescalate issues between kids without any physical violence occurring. Then we entered the digital age where one person with ill intent can create a mob of online attack dogs, pressuring the victim into silence. We’ve called this tactic, in the past, Cancel Culture.
