What Purpose Does Church Serve?

I used to ask my Christian friends, why they attended church every week. The responses were varied, of course, but came down to the same thing: I feel better afterward. Well and good, but what is the purpose of attending church services? Some will say it is to commune with god, others say it is to affirm a community of believers. My experience, as a Christian was all of the above plus wanting to learn, then apply what I learned to my life. Know any Christians? Those that are regular attendees of church? Have you ever asked them why they attend church? I’ve an idea of what most would answer: some form/use of the word habit.

Couldn’t a believer receive the same benefit at home, reding their bible, praying. Maybe even singing a solo(family) song of praise? Does anyone think that “god” is counting the numbers in the pews and the names of attendees? It does seem to be more of a social gathering, doesn’t it. I know pastors that have regular pot-luck dinners after services. What’s that about if not socialization? Are there some sort of rules that outline that to be a Christian, you must attend church, regularly? What about those that only attend sparsely or not at all? They can’t be Christians, can they? I guess televangelism works as well. Lot’s of home bound folks are able to “receive the word” that way. They can always mail in or call in their credit card numbers to give to the church.

Since more people seem to be dropping organized religion, it seems that more church services would be headed electronically than brick and mortar. You can always have a TV dinner afterwards.
