I recently read a scathing article about Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Honestly? I agreed with every word. Not because I’m a conservative but Tyson has done everything in his (limited) power to set science back because of his egotistical stupidity.
Years ago, he let his fame overload his brain, which is dangerous for a science nerd. As the media promoted him, after the death of Carl Sagan. he became too large for life and became the go-to guy for anything science, even if it were outside his field of expertise. As some came to worship him, his celebrity grew and nothing could stop his rise. I was waiting for the Academy to award him a Special Oscar, you know, because he’s so special.
But anytime he’s involved in even a semi-serious discussion, as the article above shows, he comes across as a fool. It’s too bad, really. Sagan was infinitely better known during his lifetime, but he was a science communicator, not a science TV star. Sagan wrote books that everyday people would read, enjoy, and learn from. Tyson, I think has written books, but I can’t name even one. Can you? As for Sagan, just off the top of my head: Cosmos, Contact, The Pale Blue Dot, The Demon-Haunted World, Broca’s Brain, among many, many more. Sagan helped educate a generation while Tyson has educated, well, no one.
It appears that Tyson’s flame is flickering aas he’s lost a lot of those that once hung on every word. Those followers finally realized that he was actually saying noting and therefore had nothing to offer. I’m glad to begin seeing other outlets, even a conservative one ike above, take him down a peg or two. What I’d really like to know is what Bill Maher thought of him after that disastrous and embarrassing appearance.
The problem I have with Tyson is he thinks he is funny. He always tries to come up with the smartass one liner. GROG
