Statistics and Models

Since the early days of the Presidents COVID-19 Task Force, I’ve had a lot of questions of the statistics that are presented during these daily briefings. I’m not implying that I disbelieve them but they’re not presenting the complete story and what’s interesting is that I have never heard one reporter ask about any details within those numbers. I use this site for quick updates about the number of confirmed cases, etc. As of this writing, there are 586,941 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 23,640 deaths. A lot of mortality and note that that number is a lagging indicator: expect it to go higher, somewhat, before it slows down or even stops. But that’s one number I don’t want to talk about right now.

Should Police Be Preventing Religious Gatherings?

It may sound strange for many readers here, but I’m about to side with Christians. There’s been a case recently, where a mayor has prevented Christians from holding drive up services. These are services where the congregants remain in their cars while tuning into an FM station to hear the service, or maybe lower their windows a bit. In each case the attendees remain in their own vehicles, at least attempting to perform social distancing. My opinion is that although these gatherings, these drive-in services may still prevent a threat to not only those in attendance but ultimately to the community, I can’t see that a mayor, any mayor, has the authority to prohibit these gatherings. It must come from the Governor of the state.

Thank a Health Care Worker

We’re all afraid. We’re afraid of  being infected with COVID-19. This pandemic has killed more than 11,000 people in the US (as I write this) and tens of thousands more around the world. Our government has had to place restrictions upon us, extraordinary, restrictions, and most people (last number 93%) were cooperating with what the government has recommended. Some people don’t believe that these social distancing and stay at home orders will, in the long run, do much to mitigate this awful virus. We’re beginning to see that it may be working. We have a way to go, but it’s possible that the worst is coming to an end.

Cancelling In Person Religious Services

What comes to mind when you think of the COVID-19 pandemic? Certainly the infection rate, and of course, the number of deaths in our country, if not around the world. The thought, at least for me, that comes to mind is how contagious this virus is. Some reports say it’s three times as contagious as influenza, and we’re aware of how many people, in the US alone, the flu kills every season. So most states have some sort of lockdown in place, where people are ordered to stay home, except to receive essential services, or those that provide those same services. Indications seem to be that this is working, at least a little for now and anything we as individuals can do  to mitigate the spread of this virus, however disagreeable in the short term.

Is it Time to Start Pointing Fingers?

4ACAB614-7AA3-440C-98E7-2868601AEAD8

Everyone wants to point fingers of blame when things go awry. It doesn’t matter what it is that went wrong, people seem to want to use hindsight to  say woulda, shoulda, coulda as they are pointing their fingers at the person(s) most responsible for whatever the occurrence was. A major hurricane? It’s got yo be due to climate change and the reason the climate is changing and spawning these horrific storms is a failure in the leadership of our country to do anything to reduce carbon emission that are causing the heat that results in these storms.
