I was going to pen something a little more serious concerning Zionism today, and I actually began a piece which I will eventually finish, but I’m in a different mood today and I really don’t want to boor you too much with serious blather. That doesn’t mean I won’t write something, like now where, as I was writing the other, I thought, How ridiculous is all of this? Well, it’s really ridiculous for someone like me, a non-believer and one that could give a flip whether the State of Israel exists or not. The question arises, in the last half century, in relation to the United States and the Middle East, what would be different without an Israeli state?
Nothing. Or at least, not a whole lot because most of the troubles of the United States in the middle east are of our own creation. Israel hasn’t even been a minor player in most of what has occurred in all of their history. Our meddling in the politics and culture of many of those countries is the reason we have been targeted by so many in that region. Does any one believe that the attack in New York and Washington D.C. on September 11, 2001 was because of our support of Israel? Go back to the bombing in Lebanon in 1983, killing 241 Marines, or any of the recent attacks of our troops in Iraq and Jordan? Did we have troops there for the sake of Israel or because we can’t help but meddle in the middle east? Not unlike other places in the world. There are countries that ask the U.S. to send troops to advise(train) their military in tactics to defeat internal problems (recall Nigeria 2017, where four US. “advisors” were KIA?).
So, okay, I said I wasn’t going to be serious, but to get to the point I am going to attempt to make, I needed to lay down a little history and have you understand why this is being written. Generally speaking, if any were to ask about the belief system in the United States, most people would say when pushed a little, that the U.S. is a Christian Nation and that would be true based on the number of people in the U.S. that identify as Christian versus any other religion (Judaism is around seven million, Islam is at most four and a half million (yes, that’s all)). Christianity however has a whopping two hundred thirty five million out of a total population of three hundred forty million. Are all those real Christians or just identify as such? Probably the latter because I know people myself that if asked would identify as Christian that have never been to church, never read or even owned a bible, and think Christmas and Easter is about gifts and candy (okay, that last one is a bit of an exaggeration – but only a bit). So, with a little helping hand (propaganda) it’s easy to convince “Christians” that they not only should support the land of Israel, but biblically, sort of, they are obligated to support a Jewish state.
This is why we’ve seen high numbers in the past (over 70%) of Americans that support Israeli statehood and how, over time, that number has been driven down, not because anything Americans have done but because, no matter hpw hard they try, Israel can’t help but occasionally shoot itself in the foot when it comes to their Arab population (even their Christian one as well). When we look at the absolute horror that Israel experienced on October 7, 2023, we can’t help but want to see Israel revenge their murdered twelve hundred. I personally had no problem with Israel bombing and even sending in troops to make Hamas pay dearly for their attack on that day. But after a while, even someone, like me who was a staunch supporter, began asking, When is enough, enough? How many civilians have to doe in that small strip of land to exhaust what can only be described as bloodlust. Sure, Hamas kept fighting and Israel kept responding, overwhelmingly. We, the U.S. kept sending military aid so that Usrael could complete their mission – the extinction of Hamas. But at what cost?
Some have called what happened in Gaza a genocide. Many in the U.S., supporters, were horrified by the pictures from what looked like hell itself. No matter what the pastor said in the pulpit on Sunday could ever come close to justifying what we were witnessing in real time. But Christians, in order to be a Christian, mist support Israel, the bible say so! No, it doesn’t say anything about supporting the secular government, on the people that “God has chosen”. I think that not supporting the military actions of a state does not make anyone anti-semitic. You can have favor for the Jewish people and condemn the actions of a government. Heck, we get that all the time don’t we? Don’t we see condemnation of our governments actions against alleged drug boats in the gulf? Do that same people hate all Americans because of those governmental actions?
It’s time Americans to begin to think for themselves and not allow propaganda, wherever it comes from, to dictate our thoughts and actions.
