I’ve been asked a lot lately how I can be an atheist during this time of war. Although I never do, I always want to answer that question with my own: How can you claim to be a Christian and be in favor of war? Where is it exactly in the bible where Jesus says, “Go and finish off all those danged gentiles.”? That’s silly, even for me to say, isn’t it? Of course, he never made any statements that could wildly be interpreted as being in favor of war. Or did he? There is a scripture, Mat 10:34, where Jesus said, “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.“. Of course, he proceeds to explain what he is referring to and it had nothing to do with combat.

In fact, wasn’t Jesus the one that said to bless the peacemakers, calling them the children of God and if someone strikes you on your cheek, to turn the other to him. (Mat 5:39)? What about loving your enemies (Mat 5:44)? Why then, especially those that come across as rabid believers, so much in favor of this current war with Iran? Why are so many people, yes even Christians that come out against this conflict ostracized for daring to think differently? For Christians specifically, how does your unerring support for Israel fit with the New Testament and the actual words of Jesus?

It’s true that not all Christians are in favor of this war and the same holds true for Jews as well. The United States has the highest number of Jews residing in the country only behind Israel itself; Out of an estimated 16 million Jews worldwide, almost half live the U.S. In recent polls of Jews in the U.S. almost one-third (32%) are against the conflict and Christians? Overall show a 56% disapproval for the war with striking differences between Christians that align as Zionist (Evangelicals)68% approve to those that are not Zionist (Catholic, Presbyterian, etc.), ~68% disapproval.

What about atheists? Well, we’re rarely polled specifically, but some atheist organizations have come out in question of this war, and it could probably be estimated the same percentage as non-Zionist Christians since atheists are mostly liberal.

Will a quick end to this conflict affect people’s attitude opinion? Probably, and that depends on how quickly it ends with the least number of casualties, something the government cannot easily cover up. Success? Well, some of it will be obvious with the rest being political propaganda. What it all comes down to is how much propaganda is believed by the public. I think the government is surprised how little support there is by the public. less than two weeks into the action. Notice now how they’re pushing the “freedom” issue now to the media and of course how the media suck it up. If anyone stops and thinks about ut, the question should be “Why now”? Forty-Seven years of an Islamic state with them being involved with and supporting terrorism all over the world. Killing, how many in Iraq by supplying IEDs to the insurgents? Why now?

The less anyone believes, the sooner victory will be declared, and our ships and planes will be headed home. Or at least out of a war zone. Unless someone decides it’s time to end…Cuba.
