I have never understood the logic of anyone not vaccinating their children. In the last few years, because of those parents refusing to vaccinate their children, we’ve had a resurgence in childhood diseases, many of which, just a few years ago, we considered eradicated.
These people that refuse vaccinations just don’t seem to realize that not only do they place their own families at risk for some of these horrible diseases, but others as well. No matter what any of the anti-vaccine people, whose degrees seem to come via Google, say, there is no proof that vaccines, in general, cause any harm. Of course, these same people believe there is some sort of government–big pharma conspiracy in place to harm them and their families. But many of these are the same that tout believing in science. So it seems that it’s okay to be selective in whatever the scientific consensus happens to be at the time.
It’s especially egregious that religious people believe they should get a special exemption based on their particular fairy tale — and many of these send their children to public school, where they become a health threat (yes, threat) to the other children. We shouldn’t allow this to happen. In fact, children that are not vaccinated should not be able to attend public schools. I think there needs to be a better campaign to alleviate any fears that have been generated over the past few decades, to dispel the nonsense that passes for science.
Some level of ostracism may be required as a slap in the face to those that refuse to vaccinate. How would that work? Well, on a personal level, by not allowing your kids to associate with other kids that are not vaccinated.
