A subject I seem to write about frequently is how it doesn’t matter what someone says, that person’s intent is always assumed to be negative.
As skeptics, we should never assume someone’s intent. I know I probably bore the hell out of you repeating this time and again, but I believe it’s important that we focus on those things that actually matter instead of trying to best each other on some point of contention that really doesn’t matter in the larger scheme.
So, I see this tweet this evening from someone I respect. Okay, maybe Sharon’s having a bad night…I know the feeling, but what she tweeted here is absolutely true:
There are so many issues we can work together on and problems we can solve but there are those that just won’t let the slightest statement of another go without creating an entire dramatic production.
I think that in some way we as skeptics have jumped the shark to the extent that no one wants to listen to a group of people on any issue that cannot solve the most basic problems of communication within our own community.
It’s too bad, really. I think we’re in a really good position to make an effect on society. There’s a lot of good work out there already but until we can stop slashing at one another? We’ll never make any progress.
