Hi, My name is Jim, and I’m an addict. No, not an alcohol or narcotics addict, but a technology addict. As much as I complain about all of this stuff(that I own), I can’t seem to put it away for long. Sure, I don’t stay awake 24/7 moving from device to device or ecanning the Internet on one of my various means. No, I do put it down. To sleep. For a while.
Almost the first thing I do in the morning though, is pick up the closest iPad and check my email. Then I look at this site to see how much traffic this site is receiving. Then, and only then, do I grab a cup of coffee from my (not coffee pot) Keurig while I continue to peruse what I’ve missed (nothing) while I was away from my sitters. Of course, I’m leaving out the largest, most damaging addiction: television because as I’m placing a pod in my Keurig, I turn on my TV. And it stays on all day. Until I go to sleep and even then, there’ve been times when I’ve forgotten to turn it off. Don’t ask.
That’s my true technology addiction. And I have a lot of books. Most of them unread! Why do I continue to stare (And yes, I mean stare. Ask me what the last show I watched was about.) at the boob tube (That’s really dating myself. I don’t think that phrase is in much use anymore.)all day, while trying to find something else interesting on one of my electronic devices (I’m not much of a gamer. I’ve tried. I keep trying.) while books (even my over 400 e-books) get dusty.
And, like a lot of people, I don’t own just one television. Of course I have one in my bedroom(Now you know how I’ve fallen asleep with the TV on.). as well as, yes, a small one ceiling mounted in the kitchen. Do I really need TV to cook? And the other devices. Well, there are iPads in my living room and bedroom. I have a PC in my den along with a Macbook, which I sometimes take to the living room. No, the bathroom is sacrosanct. No devices (not even a phone) there.
And yet, as I write this (on one of my iPads), I am considering more technology, for this device specifically). It‘s not expensive, and I’ve almost convinced myself that the addition would make my life even easier than it already is is now.
That’s the addicts rationalization.
