Stop Listening to Idiots

I get a kick out of online drama. It’s nothing new of course, if it’s not a couple of people posting on X going after each other, then it’s podcasters (oops! “content creators”) or something else. There are always sides and a lot of the time I find both sides compelling. I’m not really a fence sitter, I just think that in order to make a reasoned determination on whatever the silly issue happens to be at the time, I need to hear both sides (or more) that’s being offered.

Your Opinion Isn’t Important

I know I’m stating the obvious, but sometimes it just needs repeating: No one really cares what you say on the Internet. That’s right, your opinions are totally worthless because they are not in any way authoritative and no matter how much anyone repeats the same old thing, say after day, you only really convince yourself. You’re literally speaking to no one. It’s the same way no matter the medium, whether it’s like this, blogging, or video screeds about the latest political or cultural disaster. No one really cares. Nothing any of us say here affects anything in the long term. Or even the short. The universe is like that: unconcerned with our billions of exaggerated egos.

Don’t Be Fooled

I tend to forget, maybe conveniently, that what I read on any social media platform does not necessarily reflect reality. The same goes with podcasts. There are some podcasts that discuss topics meant to trigger the audience in some way. I often have to tell myself that what I’m reading or listening to is meant to receive clicks, which is good for the person that posts or records but that’s about it.

When Opinion Meets Fact

It happens to everyone. Sometimes we’re just wrong. It doesn’t matter how long we’ve held a certain opinion or belief, when presented with evidence that refutes what we have always considered as fact, we should accept it, humbly, and move on. That’s the way science works. Over years, even decades, new information is developed that gives us a different perspective on what had been considered settled in the past. It’s a good thing, in that we expand and improve our knowledge in some area of science. The same should be applied to our knowedge in other subhects as well. We shouldn’t be cowed by popular opinion, or that which appears to be politically correct views.
