Was The Social Media Summit a Bust?

I’ve been waiting for a while to see reaction from some attendees of the White House Social Media Summit, which received a lot of fanfare (positive and negative) before it occurred  and any commentary on any. outcomes from the event. I looked especially to two individuals, Tim Pool and Will Chamberlain, both who have spoken about the perceived bias in social media platforms, to have something definitive to say about what they thought about the day. I can sum both up I believe correctly by stating, not much came out of it.

Twitter Just Shadow-Banned My Friend. Yes, I’m Angry.

After this recent post, I was perusing my Twitter account and came across something I found to be imponderable. Someone I’ve been following for quite a while now has been suddenly shadow-banned by the platform. For those that may be unaware of what shadow-banning constitutes, it is simply that those that do not follow you will ever see your tweets, and you may not be found by another user when using the search function. That’s essentially silencing a person.  This is a person I actually consider a friend, and not just on Twitter, we’ve actually spoken together. It’s disturbing to me and I wonder if this is not a step in the new rules Twitter is implementing as I wrote about in that post.

Twitter Bans ‘Dehumanizing’ Language

C3DF1E75-6A13-44C0-9380-66689F8E0B59

Well, in it’s infinite wisdom, Twitter has decided to ban posts from its site that is dehumanizing or insulting to religious groups. I wonder what this actually means? In their blog post concerning the change, Twitter gave a few banal examples of what they may consider dehumanizing speech toward a religion. But to me, most of those, although they may be insulting to some, were nothing more than criticisms. According to this New York Times article, upon implementation, they had already removed a tweet by Minister Louis Farrakhan comparing Jews to termites. Okay, I can see how that is considered dehumanizing but I wonder how far the company will go to protect their users?

”Mini-AOC” Accounts Deleted After Numerous Death Threats

It appears now, according to something I saw online, via Twitchy, that the mini-AOC account has been deleted due to the number of  death threats the family had been receiving. Yes, death threats to a 8 year old girl for a parody of Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, a member of Congress. Personally, I found the short videos cute and sometimes even funny because I thought they represented well the mind of the member and of course it was all in good fun, right? On the other side though, I don’t think much of any parent using their young child in that manner.

De-Platforming is Bad on it’s Face

As most regular visitors here are aware, I am against de-platforming people on social media for any reason, with the exception of threatening violence against a person or a group. No matter how despicable or vile I might find someone’s opinion, They have a right, in my view to express it. As I’ve written on more than one occasion, we may surely agree on some people that need to be kicked off social media, but then what? Well, of course, these less controversial will be in the sights on certain people, who will complain to these platforms about what is being posted, and it becomes a regression where voices, just because we happen to disagree with their point of view on any subject, are forever silenced.
