Minority Views Are Terrorism

On occasion, politicians let us know what they really believe. It’s purely by accident but when it happens, we should all take notice.

This quote came from a Hillary Clinton town hall on CNN. Now before someone accuses me of picking on Democrats, I’m not. I would write the same no matter the ideology of the person. This is pretty scary stuff and it should make us all wonder how many of our representatives, again ideology aside, believe something similar.

“We cannot let a minority of people, and that’s what it is, it is a minority of people, hold a viewpoint that terrorizes the majority of people.”

So, holding a viewpoint that is different than whatever majority she’s referring to equates to terrorism. Let me see here: yep, atheists are a minority and hold a different view about the relationship between church and state than the majority so I guess that classifies us as terrorists.

I don’t think she really means that, but it is what she said. I hope she gets grilled by reporters on that statement. Of course, there’ll be all kinds of backtracking. It’s too late, it’s out there.

Maybe Ms. Clinton should shut up while she’s behind?

  1. I agree that on the face of it this comment is really stupid, to say the least. But context matters. Why is it that you don’t provide that context here? I googled it and discovered that Clinton made the comment in reference to gun-control opponents. (http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/17/politics/clinton-town-hall-what-to-watch/). So I don’t think she meant for the statement to apply in all cases involving a minority and a majority. It was obvious to me that she meant the statement only in the context of those gun rights advocates who oppose any gun control regulations. When you don’t provide this context, then I think you are misrepresenting the meaning of the comment.

I know you said you are not picking on democrats. But when you present a quote out of its context, as you did here, don’t be surprised if some don’t think you dishonest when you say you aren’t politicizing it.
