Lying is a Good Disinfectant, I Guess

Well, I can hardly believe it. The BS is so thick, it’s just incredible.

I happened over to one of The Usual Suspects blogs and found another post about the Skepchick “art” that’s going to be on display soon. I wrote about it here. The post references another post, of course as this blogger really doesn’t write very much, just copies and pastes from other sources, mainly.

I was surprised though to see the blog is by Phil Plait and it immediately starts with an out and out lie. I know that Phil is a friend of those-that-cannot-be-disagreed-with, but to see something like this? Well, what little respect Plait had from me is now gone.

Here’s the ultimate lie:

For having the temerity to say that women should have equal rights, opportunities, and treatment as men, she gets a tsunami of hatred, venom, death threats, rape threats, and more. It would be enough to break down hardened people, and it has. But not Amy. She manages to not only deal with this horrifying onslaught but also turn it into art.

I don’t think that anyone believes that women shouldn’t have equal rights, opportunities, or the same treatment as men. Do you? That’s not what she has done though to call upon herself derogatory commentary. What she has done, time and again is attack people that happen to have a different opinion than the groupthink that she’s a part of on a daily basis.

She attacks peoples reputations, participates in whisper campaigns against people , accusing them of sexual harassment, misogyny, even rape – without any proof ever provided.

If all she did was stand up for egalitarianism as is claimed here, few would have an issue (there’s always going to be some idiots out there).

No, she participates in all of the crass demagoguery with her friends. She, and the rest, have no shame.

I don’t believe it’s right to troll her or anyone with these “threats”. I abhor the practice of the few that do this. But it doesn’t say anything about the skeptic/atheist world as a whole. It’s a minority and most likely (I don’t know for sure) that most don’t come from skeptics or atheists.

Trying to paint a broad brush (hey pretty neat – she’s an artist, get it?) that skeptic and atheist women in general receive this kind of “abuse” is just dishonest.

The best disinfectant would be to stop lying. Quit calling genuine disagreement misogyny.

I won’t be rude and call this a lie. But it is a self-deception, a false narrative you have woven for yourself and managed to convince yourself is true.

Phil’s comment was not a lie. But your belief that it is a lie is part of your self-deception.
