No, Communism is Not Imminent

I’ve been disappointed in the recent coverage of midterm primaries around the country. Of course, some states have more at risk than others, but don’t we all have a risk, as we do every two years, of voing for either the same numbskulls to retain their offices, or take a look at some new numbskulls, people that make more, greater promises than the seat’s incumbent or other challengers.

What’s been most concerning to me were the chicken little headlines spun from te results that made it appear to viewers that the communists were about to take over the country. Seriously. Go watch any, I mean any Fox News show the day after and you’ll hear host after host, contributor ad naseum predicting how soon the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) would soonn be in control of the Democratic Party and if they end up taking control of Congress this fall, tht would spell the end of America as we know it.

I’m not making this up. Sure they exaggerated and there was none more alarmed and fanning the flames against the DSA communists than the primetime hosts at Fox. of course, the hand wringing began much earlier in the day and there were the obligatory panels of fair-and-balanced guests (You have to give Fox that: unlike their competition, they seek opposing views.) discussing the possibility of an upcoming Aplocalypse for the united states if we don’t start paying attention to al of these commies being selected to run for office. The real story is somewhat different.

On one of the daytime shows (I forget which one), Patrick Murphy, a former democrat member of Congress and, under Obama, acting Secretary of the Army, pointed out that all of this was for nothing because there were only around 250 DSA members (&or people associated wth the DSA) that are in elected positions throughout the U.S. That’s out of some 600,000 local, state, and federal elected officials. 250. It doesn’t seem that in the next 2 years that there will be be a sudden surge of DSA candidates around the country taking office and tearing up the Constitution.

I attempted to look up Mr. Murphy’s claim and I could not verify it (I didn’t look very long). I was a little surprised that none of the conservatives on the panel challenged his statement at all. In fact, what I took from the responses he received was that he was probably correct. So, is there anything for us to worry about? Are the communists coming for our children? Probably. But the idea that our government is about to fall to the socialists/communists is bunk. It’s not to say that the DSA may one day, in the future replace what we now know as the Democratic Party. We’ve had parties come and go in this country since its beginning. Right now, their ideas may be popular with a segment of our society but I believe it’s only because we’ve all been betrayed by the establishment parties and people are looking for something, anything, different that might just make their lives a little better.

Maybe if the 2 establishment parties were to realize this, they too might decide to work for their electorate and not for the next election.
