I’m always amazed by people whose entire existence seems to be conditioned on their popularity in social media. It’s true. You know who I am talking about.Just look around you workplace right now (if you work indoors, of course) and count the number of people that have some social media tab (or two) open on their browser but claim they’re just skimming the page noe nf gsin when actuslly, their work sits while they are engaged in something on X, Facebook, even TikTok. Some companies have even resorted to blocking their employees using social media on company time, on the company’s network.

There are several ways of blocking social media on company networks from firewalls to group policies, to host files (Windows only) among many others that may include allow employees to access social media during their lunch hour. There are ways to set access times during their lunch days. The best way, however, is to have a written corporate policy that all employees know about on their first day. That way, if discipline is required, it doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone because ewveryone is aware of the policy.

Why am I commenting on this? Becaise in my own. situation, I see this going on fairly regularly and of course, there’s no enforcement from the company. then I hear company management talking about productivity, decreasing or just not increasing no matter how they ty to keep the employees satisfied in their work.But that’s sometimes hard to do when employees, in general, hate their jobs and only show up for the (sometimes) overly-generous paycheck. I’ve not only witnessed this, I’ve heard others actually talking about their job satisfaction this way.How these people were hired initially, I have no idea but it’s clear they weren’t vetted well.

Social media has become ubiquitous amongst most populations (especially in the west) and it should be a primary goal of all employers to ensure their employees are working at what they were hired to do and not wasting company time or resources on social media. Think about it: people have all evening to waste if they want on anything they desire, including social media. Can’t they get along for just 8 hours per day without access?
