I really do not understand how criticizing a foreign government is analogus to hating that country yet this is what I witness daily on the X platform. There are s many self declared “Zionists” on the platform, at least in my timeline that it’s getting impossible to make a simple statement about how, for instance, the government of Israel has so much influence within our own government. I have yet to be accused of being antisemitic, but I think that’s an accusation that’s not far off because I am open about my criticizm of the Israeli government.
I don’t hate anyone, and hating a government is like hating an inanimate object because, well, government (at least mine) moves so slowly that it appears to be just that: unmoving. This whole drama is contrived. Imagine being Jewish and being accused og antisemitism. If you haven’t been paying attention, yes, that’s been happening in social media in general lately. Next up? Those of us of any ideology (liberal, conservative, whatever) criticizing our own government will be accused of sedition or maybe full-on insurrection.
I think with at least some people, it’s okay to criticize the government, as long as it’s the opposition party. As a conservative, I guess that means liberals are the spawn of the devil. Or something. I know there are dumb conservatives just as there are dumb liberals and that should be a warning to all of us not on the extreme of any ideology. Remeber when instead of shouting over one another there was serious conversations about policy? Barely. It’s been so long that the majority of both ideologies have mostly walked away from any discussion because the extremists have taken charge of any conversation and of course, not being on whatever side you’re supposed to, automatically places a you in some category. So why even attempt to speak up?
I’m not sure that everyone that criticizes the Israeli government isn’t antisemitic, but to assume up front criticizing a government equals hate of an entire country, means none of us should be criticizing our own.
