In my last post, concerning food, I wrote about getting a lot of protein in my diet, which I’ve been informed (by my doctor, by the way) is a good way of staying healthy while trying to lose/maintain a healthy weight. A big mistake a lot of people make, I was told, is that they cut the calories, and yes lose the desired (well, sometimes) weight, but in do so, lose muscle mass, which is something you definitely don’t want to do at any age.
So, yes, I eat a lot of protein, and I vary where it comes from. Red meat, chicken, seafood, all have huge amounts of protein, but also dairy like eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt (plain for me), as well as regular cheese (cheddar, colby, swiss, etc.). And as I mentioned before, yes, I am limiting calories. I do that one exercise I mentioned previously. That means, I think you can see, is I limit my carbohydrate intake. I’m not very active (okay, I go for walks), so limiting useless calories helps me in reaching and maintaining my goals.
I’ve discovered that there are a lot of low to zero carbohydrate foods that, as far as I can remember, weren’t readily available (in other words, not in my regular grocery store) as they are now. They may still be speciality foods, but they’re right on the shelf next to the brands I was used to buying, some of them the same brand, but with “low carbohydrate” on the label. One item I’ve given up, easily because I wasn’t a huge consumer anyway, is bread products, meaning, well, flour. Lots of bad stuff in mpost of those for what I’m trying to accomplish, but this also limit what I can put together for a quick meal if I want. A little disappointing, but something, at least for now, I can live without.
Then, just perusing online a store I regularly shop, I discovered there is something called “low carbohydrate tortillas”. Okay, being skeptical, I looked a little closer. Sure enough, these has 2 net carbs and 45 calories (another had 60 calories) per serving. Seriously? I can have wraps now, I thought. So, yes, I bought some and even though they contain flour, they work for me. My other choice, what the purists do (online, on YouTube) is make their own “bread” using cheese or yogurt or egg whites (or all of these in one recipe) and then bake them in the oven. Yes, pure protein, and they say, flavorful. But I just got something that looks and tastes like a real tortilla (because it is!) and all I add to my “diet” is 2 carbs. Considering my low intake already, I think I can work with these.
The image above is yes, exactly what I purchased. Yes, they’re more expensive than regular tortillas but if anyone’s looking to try and control their carb load, this will definitely help in that goal.
And no, this is not turning into a “diet” or “food” blog.
